Frequently Asked Questions

Electrolysis is permanent hair removal, regardless of the cause - heredity, metabolic, or hormonal conditions. A small electric current is transmitted by a fine, sterile probe directly into the hair follicle, destroying the dermal papilla, the matrix, and an area called "the bulge", all of which cause hair to grow and regenerate. Electrolysis, like all hair removal treatments, does require multiple treatments which can take up to a year or longer to treat all hair cycles and may require touch-up treatments.

Laser hair removal is the process of hair removal by means of exposure to laser light that destroys the hair follicle. Laser hair removal has become popular because of its speed and efficacy, although some of the efficacy is dependent upon the individual laser, as well as the skill and experience of the laser operator. Some will need touch-up treatments, after the initial set of 5-8 treatments.

Both laser and electrolysis are FDA-approved methods of hair removal. Laser is classified as permanent hair reduction because the laser can not remove blonde, red, white or gray hairs. However it can effectively remove dark hairs from most areas of the body much quicker than electrolysis. Electrolysis is classified as permanent hair removal because electrolysis can remove all hairs regardless of color.

I work with each client to establish a treatment plan based on factors such as the color and density of hair, the size of the area, and what removal methods have been used. From here, we come up with a treatment plan that is individual to the client and can in some cases, be a combination of both laser and electrolysis treatments.

There are multiple kinds of lasers on the market and some are better than others. We have a Cynosure Apogee Elite, which has both Alexandrite, and Nd:YAG which means it is safe to use on all Fitzpatrick types.

Laser treatment around the eye area is not recommended. Electrolysis can be used on areas both large and small and is perfect for removing hairs in areas that need detailed shaping, such as the eyebrows and eyelashes.

Congratulations! Unfortunately you cannot have laser treatments while pregnant. Should you choose to continue with electrolysis treatments, please speak to your doctor and bring a doctor's note to proceed.

New technology has made hair removal more comfortable and effective than ever before. However, immediately following treatment, there may be temporary erythema (redness), edema (swelling) or tenderness which varies with each individual. After care instructions will be given during treatment and are also available on the Electrolysis and Laser information pages.

There are three types, or modalities, of electrolysis used today - galvanic (current produces a chemical reaction), thermolysis (short-wave which produces heat) and a modality that blends the two. They all result in effective permanent hair removal. We prefer to use the blend method for our clients.

We prefer clients to have a few days of growth, the hair needs to be long enough for us to grab with tweezers without damaging the surrounding skin.

If you are worried about the sensation, here are some things we suggest prior to treatment. Cut back on caffeine before your session, this does not bother everyone but caffeine can make clients more uncomfortable. Apply topical numbing cream 15-30 minutes prior to session, we use 5% Recticare or Great Value brand lidocaine, some clients prefer to apply and then cover with saran wrap to help with absorption. You may also take over the counter pain medications such as Tylenol, Advil etc prior to treatment.

  • Do not remove any scabbing (if this occurs). This is a natural healing process and interference could result in infection or scarring. This means no abrasive cleansers, no vigorous scrubbing. Avoid Retin-A, peels, or acidic products for 24-48 hours.
  • Do apply a medicated lotion for two mornings and evenings and after treatment if needed.
  • Do not expose the area to direct sunlight or use a tanning bed for 24 hours.
  • If the area becomes infected, apply a hot Epsom salt compress (1 tablespoon to 1 cup hot water) for 10 minutes, three times daily for 2 days.

  • If the area swells, apply hot and cold compresses alternately for 10 minutes every 3 hours until swelling goes away. Please phone if you have any questions or concerns: 850-905-2071

There are many variables that can affect laser treatment (hair density or type, area, prior removal methods, hormonal factors.) For most, treatment requires 5-7 regularly scheduled appointments with possible touch-ups. Lasers have the best results with darker hairs, meaning some clients will have some lighter hairs left behind. You can choose to remove these with electrolysis after the initial treatments.

Clients who wish to start laser treatments need to avoid sun exposure for at least 2 weeks before and after each treatment. This includes natural sunlight, sunless tanners, and tanning beds. Certain areas may be better to start in the winter months, such as the back, chest, legs and bikini line. Clients that tan easily and retain that tan, may need to be out of the sun longer for the color to fade. Sun exposure can cause hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation which can take months to reverse.

Shaving, clipping, bleach and the use of depilatory creams(such as Nair) are acceptable forms of removal in between sessions since tweezing, sugaring and threading can negatively affect treatment and are not recommended.

We prefer clients to have up to a week of growth for laser treatments. If the hair is too long, we may require you to trim the area.

Our laser has a cold air chiller that blows on the area the entire time to help with discomfort but if you are worried about the sensation, you can cut back on caffeine before your session and plan around hormonal cycles. You may also take over the counter pain medications such as Tylenol, Advil etc prior to treatment.

  • The area may have edema(swelling) and/or erythema (redness) directly after treatment. These symptoms generally last 30 minutes to an hour. If it persists, you can apply Hydrocortisone, Benadryl or ice.
  • Following laser treatment, take warm(not hot) showers. Avoid hot baths/showers for 24 hours. Avoid working out for at least 12 hours.
  • Do not apply products such as deodorant, makeup and lotions for 12-24 hours.
  • You may experience small breakouts within 24 hours of treatment, this is normal. Using a gentle cleanser, and witch hazel is recommended.
  • You can experience hyper/hypo pigmentation if exposed to sunless tanners, tanning beds or direct sunlight within 2-3 weeks. Continue to avoid these if you plan to continue treatments.
  • Please contact us at 850-905-2071 immediately if you have any questions about after treatment care!

Thinking about removing or lightening a tattoo? You’re not alone — and today’s laser technology makes the process safer and more effective than ever. Our Astanza Duality laser, is an advanced system designed to target unwanted tattoo ink while being gentle on your skin. Whether your goal is complete removal or fading a tattoo for a cover-up, treatments are customized to fit your skin type, tattoo, and personal goals.

This laser uses two different wavelengths, which allows us to treat a wide range of ink colors effectively. The laser breaks the ink into tiny particles, and over time your body naturally clears them away. Treatments are precise and focused on the ink itself, helping to protect the surrounding skin and support smooth healing.

Tattoo removal is a gradual process, so multiple sessions are needed. Sessions are spaced several weeks apart to give your skin time to heal and your body time to flush out the ink. During your consultation, we’ll walk you through what to expect, how many sessions you may need, and how to care for your skin after each treatment.

Our goal is to make your tattoo removal experience as comfortable, informative, and stress-free as possible.

Most clients describe the feeling like a quick snapping sensation, kind of like a rubber band flicking against your skin. It’s usually over rather quickly, and most people say it’s more startling than painful. We also use cooling techniques to make it more comfortable.

Tattoo removal is gradual, so it’s a little different for everyone, as removal usually happens over several sessions. How many depends on the tattoo’s size, colors, age, ink, and how your body responds. But it can be roughly 5-10 depending on those factors.

Pricing is based on the size of the tattoo being treated. Once we see the tattoo, we can place it into the correct size category and give you an estimate of pricing. Pricing is finalized during your consultation before treatment is started.

The tattoo removal laser treatment may create a superficial burn wound. There is immediate whitening, swelling, and redness of the treated area, which usually lasts for several minutes. Some clients may then develop blisters, crusts, or scabs within 8-72 hours, which can last for 1-2 weeks or more. The treated areas may be pink or pale after the scab separates. Some patients may experience bruising or swelling, which usually fades over the first week after treatment. Scarring, which can be hypertrophic or keloid in nature, may occur but are very rare. Pigmentation abnormalities can occur, but are temporary except in very rare cases. Primary healing is usually complete within 4 weeks, although this may differ depending on several variables. Continued fading can be seen in the following months. A few things to keep in mind to ensure the best possible fading and removal outcome:

  1. Keep the treated area clean and dry while it is healing. Clean the area gently with soap and water and then pat the area dry. You may apply a thin coating of ointment (i.e. Aquaphor, Petrolatum, Neosporin) up to three times a day for three days while the area is healing. Keep the area covered with a sterile dressing at that time.
  2. Blisters are possible and likely to occur within the first 8 hours after treatment. Don't be alarmed, blisters heal fairly easily on their own and are part of the normal healing process. It is imperative that you DO NOT pop, rip, or pick at the blisters. If you are unsure of how to care for it, please reach out to us at 850-905-2071
  3. In the first few hours, the treated area may feel similar to a sunburn. Applying cool compresses the first couple of days after treatment can help ease some discomfort and inflammation from the treatment.
  4. Should you scab, don't pick or expose the scabbed area, as it may result in infection, scarring, or permanent pigment change. Shaving should be avoided in the treated area until it is completely healed.
  5. It is okay to shower 4-6 hours after the treatment, but take care to avoid high pressure water with high heat on the treated area. Baths, hot tubs, swimming pools, or any form of soaking are not recommended until all blistering and scabbing are completely healed as they may increase the risk of infection.
  6. Exercise is generally safe 2-3 days after treatment taking into account the other after care instructions provided here. Some bruising may be experienced if muscles underneath the treated area are exercised.
  7. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher daily to protect against UVA/UVB rays over the treatment area. You must do this between sessions while removal is performed. Limiting sun exposure between treatments will reduce the amount of tan in the area, thereby reducing the risk of side effects. Do not wear makeup or any cream on the treated area unless recommended by our office for 48 hours.
  8. Itching is common due to the dehydrating effect of the laser treatment. Use Aquaphor, vitamin E ointment, or hydrocortisone cream to the treatment area. Itching resulting from an allergic reaction is rare, but also possible. Notify us if itching or swelling persists for more than a week after treatment.
  9. If the area looks infected (honey colored crusting, oozing or spreading redness), you experience unusual discomfort or bleeding, or any other complications develop, contact the office immediately.
  10. If you have any extreme reaction, call 911 or go to the emergency department.
